Installation of the CAPS system, whether in a retail store, or in a whole shopping centre is equally simple since the CAPS system is fully customisable and with antennae and wireless options that is interchangeable and can be used in combination with each other, any kind of premises may be protected. (see typical antennae layout in figure 3, Appendix A).

Installation will entail antennae or wireless transmitters being installed in safe areas of the building(out of normal sight for tampering) and all trolleys in use will be fitted with one locking castor and an anti-tilt device on one of the rear wheels. The anti-tilt device mentioned, stops the trolley’s front wheels being lifted by tilting the trolley onto it’s rear wheels and thereby freeing the locked wheel from the road surface. Therefore, when locked, the trolley requires deliberate, conspicuous action to be moved further such as lifting the whole trolley to load it onto a vehicle, which should be detected by store personnel or customers in the vicinity. Of course the perpetrator could look really suspicious and try to drag the trolley further!

Where it is necessary to use physical antennae (such as along the perimeter of the parking lot), it is generally planted in a saw-cut groove of approximately 2.5cm deep and 1,5cm wide. Obstacles like curbs, planters, etc, may be either avoided or penetrated with conduit.(In the case of planters, the antenna cable is usually buried at the bottom of the planter, inside plastic conduit.

The areas where trolleys are prohibited to pass (exits or along the perimeter of the store/parking lot), are marked with red lines (Thermoplastic paint) and the “legal” areas are therefore clearly demarcated. A trolley passing the red line will experience it’s wheel locking and the “customer” will go no further with the trolley until a store attendant unlocks the wheel with a reset controller.

Reset controllers are kept in store on top of a “docking station” in the store (see figure 4, Appendix B). If any one of the reset controllers are removed from the docking station for longer than 24 hours, the reset controller will disable itself until it comes in contact with the docking station again to be reset/enabled.
