Global Clocking and Carttronics

During May 2008 Global Clocking realised that there are a very large gap in the technology utilised to curb shopping trolley theft/damage. Initially, other forms of technology were explored but the systems offered by Carttronics had the most reliable and thoroughly tested track record and also proved to be the best in it’s class. One similar system, manufactured and distributed by another company from the US, was also evaluated but found to be inferior and not suitable for the SA application. Global Clocking subsequently started negotiations with Carttronics and managed to secure the Sole distributorship as it is today.

What is CAPS & POPS?

Both the CAPSTM and the POPSTM systems incorporate antennae driven and/or wireless emitted signals to locking wheels(castors) that is fitted on the trolleys. The antennae or wireless signal then “tells” the trolley wheel to lock under certain conditions(such as a trolley leaving a set perimeter). When “locking”, a braking shell locks into place under the wheel, which renders the wheel useless. The difference between the CAPS and POPS systems is the way in which the signals are generated and more particularly, where in the store.

CAPS(Cart anti-theft Protection system) would simply stop trolleys leaving a certain point (set perimeter) of the store. Eg. When a trolley attempts to leave the parking ground of a store. Thereby protecting trolleys.

POPS(Push-out theft Protection system) is a push-out prevention system designed to stop a trolley when it leaves a certain perimeter without first passing through certain pay points such as POS’s in supermarkets. Thereby stopping trolleys with unpaid merchandise leaving the store.

The Solution

CAPS® is a patented electronic system that stops the removal of shopping trolleys from retail sites and dramatically reduces all trolley-related expenses. The system is built around a rugged, computerized caster (see figure 1, Appendix A), and a buried perimeter antenna. The system incorporates an RF transmitter (see figure 2, Appendix A) that generates a low frequency, low power signal along the antenna line to define the limit of trolley travel. When a CAPS-protected trolley rolls within a few feet of the antenna line, an integrated braking shell is electronically released to roll down under the wheel, where it locks in place to disable the trolley.

POPS Overview

POPS prevents customers or others from leaving the store with a cart full of unpaid-for merchandise. POPS is an intelligent system that creates invisible electronic clouds around your store. One signal(cloud) revokes the castor’s (the same castor used for the CAPS system) permit to leave the store (typically where the merchandise is on shelves) and the castor will lock if it is pushed beyond a set perimeter without receiving a new permit signal to leave at the POS. By the same token, if a castor(trolley) moves past the POS, a permit signal is issued to the castor and the client will be free to leave the set perimeter without the castor locking up. CAPS may be installed on a further perimeter, if so required.

The POPS system is completely wireless and is operated with transmitters at the POS’s and among the merchandise(shopping) part of the store. See figure 5, Appendix C.

Real time monitoring of system health.

On both the CAPS & POPS systems, it can be connected to a web portal from Carttronics, which monitors the system in real time and the moment anything goes wrong with the system, eg a broken antenna or defective transmitter, a signal is sent to the Carttronics server and Global Clocking gets notified accordingly and will dispatch the necessary repair personnel.
